Leather Care & Maintenance
A few basics to keep your leather looking good for years — the short version. For the full room-by-room, stain-by-stain guide (cleaning routines, conditioning schedule, storage, and what to do if it gets caught in the rain), see our complete Leather Care & Maintenance Guide in our Etsy shop.
The Basics
- Keep it dry. If it gets rained on, let it air-dry away from direct heat — never on a radiator or in direct sun.
- Condition every few months. A leather conditioner keeps the hide from drying out and cracking. Test on a hidden spot first.
- Store on a wide hanger. Wire hangers distort the shoulders of jackets over time.
- Avoid direct sunlight for long periods. UV exposure fades and dries leather faster than almost anything else.
- Wipe spills immediately with a dry cloth — don't rub, blot.
What Not to Do
- Don't machine wash or dry-clean genuine leather.
- Don't use household cleaning sprays — they often contain solvents that strip natural oils.
- Don't store in plastic — leather needs to breathe. Use a breathable garment bag or cotton dust bag instead.
